Skeena Stream Conditions Tool
Why It Matters:

The Skeena Stream Conditions Tool allows for easy and transparent assessment of stream temperature data relevant to fisheries practices. The tool is intended to support decision making, by allowing the user to identify if current conditions exceed thresholds recommended by fishing best practices and regional management efforts.

How It's Calculated:

The tool calculates and displays the Mean Weekly Maximum Temperature (MWMT) for a selected site. The MWMT is the average of the maximum temperatures recorded over the previous 7 days (not including the day of reporting). Note that the MWMT is an average, and so daily maximums and durations of high temperatures for each day will vary; it is also important to consider these daily values when making fisheries-related decisions.

Water Temperature Impacts on Fish (Source: Fisheries and Oceans Canada)

18°C - Decreased swimming performance | 19°C - Signs of stress and slow migration | 20°C - Associated with high pre-spawn mortality and disease | 21°C - Chronic exposure can lead to severe stress and early mortality
